Smoke Alarms
Installation:
When installing a mains powered smoke alarms, always use a licensed electrician.
It is recommended that smoke alarms be located in all sleeping areas and in all paths of travel between sleeping areas and exits to the open air.
Including sleep areas in separate parts of the house and where sleep-outs or similar areas are not connected by a passageway to the main part of the house.
It is particularly important to install a smoke alarm inside bedrooms where:
- People sleep with their bedroom doors closed, particularly if heaters or electrical appliances are used in those rooms
- People smoke in their bedrooms
- Noisy equipment such as air-conditioners, televisions or stereos may mask the sound of a remote smoke alarm

Smoke alarms require regular testing and cleaning to provide effective protection. You should consult the manufacturer’s guide.
Smoke alarm maintenance recommendations:
* Regular testing (not less than once per month) to ensure the battery and the alarm sounder are operating.
* Replacing batteries annually, where appropriate.
* Cleaning with a vacuum cleaner (at least once a year) to remove particles that will affect smoke alarm performance.
When maintaining your smoke alarm it also important to note the following:
* Generally, smoke alarms will sound a regular warning ‘beep’ if the battery needs replacing. Refer to manufacturer’s guide for exact warning details.
* Smoke alarms should never be painted.
* The date the smoke alarm was manufactured will be displayed. Smoke alarms have a maximum service life of ten (10) years and need to be replaced.
